CCG GP Mental Health Commissioning Leadership Programme

This leadership programme will support CCG General Practitioner leads for mental health to improve their mental health commissioning skills. It will focus on needs assessment; system redesign; exemplar specifications; the use of levers and mechanisms to drive improvement; and the completion of local commissioning projects.

The programme will link with the National Mental Health Intelligence Network initiative to accelerate CCG and Health and Wellbeing Boards’ access to data and mental health intelligence to inform local planning and service redesign.

The CCG GP Mental Health Commissioning Leadership Development Programme will build on learning from a 10-day course developed by NHS London in 2012-13, where 32 CCG GP leads for mental health heard from people with experience of living with mental health problems; the evidence-base; and models of care delivered by expert clinicians. It included a focus on needs assessment; system redesign; exemplar specifications; the use of levers and mechanisms to drive improvement; and the completion of local commissioning projects.

A Steering Group is being convened in order to advise on the design, and ensure governance of a national procurement process that will assure:

  • engagement with key stakeholders
  • equitable deployment of resources
  • delivery of the programme sub nationally, by one or more providers/consortia
  • quality, and achievement of learning outcomes
  • maximum return on investment
  • sustainability
